Counter top Maintenance

While quartz is a popular choice for counter tops, granite is still the first choice, due to its beauty, durability and cost.

Quartz is running $55.00 per sq. ft. Granite can be as little as $30.00 per sq. ft. That’s a dramatic difference.

You may think granite wears like "iron". You can place hot pans on it, cut on it and pour hot sticky liquid on it. It is a work horse, but it must be maintained properly.
Whether its polished, honed, or a leather finish, it must be sealed. When your granite was installed it may or may not have been sealed.  You need to confirm with the fabricator. Regardless, at least once a year it needs to be resealed to maintain its beauty and function.

We recently were at a new client’s home. She was wanting a kitchen remodel and she wanted to replace her granite.

The granite was beautiful and not that old. Around the sink the water had seeped into the granite. She admits she hadn't kept up the maintenance and now it has soft spots, chips on the surface, especially behind the sink.

During every day use the granite countertop must be cleaned.  It is recommended that one use a cleaner designed to clean a treated granite surface.  Cleaners like Ajax + 409 can dull + strip the finished surface.

Did you know?
Black or dark granite colors are harder than lighter ones? It’s true!
