Is gray here to stay?

It seems as though every few years there is a 'trend' color.  I know this is dating myself, but when I was a newly wed, 'harvest gold' was the 'in' color.  You simply were not 'with it' unless you had harvest gold accents and appliances throughout your home.

So now, gray in various shades is becoming the current trend. I have customers that come in to my design studio asking about gray cabinetry for the kitchen or bath.  Clients have asked me if gray is going to date their home?  It's hard for me to correctly answer.  Gray is an emerging color in 2016, going into 2017.  So yes it could be reminiscent of 2016, you know, when they had that nasty election?

If you pair gray with white as your color scheme, it reminds me of Nantucket, Martha's VIneyard... classic colors.  I am advising my clients if they want to use gray in their color scheme, to use it as the center island with white cabinetry throughout the design.

Using gray as an accent color in an island, gives you the trend as well as making it visually more interesting.  If you think you may be selling your house in the next few years, but still want to be 'on-trend', I would go with classic white cabinetry, and paint the walls your favorite shade of gray.  You can also utilize gray accents throughout your home, such as throw pillows, chair cushions, artwork, etc.

Classic colors will stand the test of time.

Remember, if you use accent color sparingly, you are only 1 gallon of paint away from the next 'current trend.'
